How to Simply Grow Your Lilies Organically
No one could probably resist the bright, steady blooms, and delightful scent of lilies. No wonder they have become one of the prominent and mostly appreciated flowers by many, by gardeners in particular.
Growing and managing lilies may seem fastidious work but they are in reality easy to grow. There is really no need to be anxious to matters like soil type or soil pH, and on the type of environment they can easily be grown at. Lilies can definitely grow well both under full sunlight and or in shady areas.
On growing organic lilies
Lilies must be immediately planted the soonest they are acquired. They can be planted either during fall or spring seasons. Consequently, it is because of their lack of paper covering known as tunic that they are prone to frailty and can dry out instantly. Tunic is common among hardy bulbs except with lilies.
Unlike other bulbs, lilies require a well-drained soil. You need at least 12 inches deep of planting holes wherein to plant them. Organic matter such as peat moss or leaf mold can be added to help improve soil structure and water holding capacity of soil. Placing compost activators (e.g., bone meal or barnyard manure) at the bottom of planting hole can also be helpful to enhance growth of lilies. Ideally, lilies do not really need fertilizers during planting. A sprinkle of organic fertilizer is rather needed until the bulbs churn out green leaves.
Moreover, applying compost or well-rotted manure around lilies can further keep the soil moist and cool. Enduring mulch (e.g., wood chips, cocoa shells, bark mulch) can also be used.
When already their flowering term, you can remove some worn-out flowers only make sure not to cut off more than one third of the stem. This is done so to avoid decrease in plant’s stability and strength.
Types of lilies
Following are several types of lilies.
- Asiatic lilies, which begin to bloom in spring season and throughout midsummer.
- Midsummer lilies, which later progresses with the Trumpet lilies.
- Tiger lilies and Rubrum lilies, which emerge extremely hardy and contented in most natural environments.
- Oriental lilies, which ends the season when they begin blooming. They bloom highly-scented thus perfect for cutting for indoor floral arrangements.
After knowing that growing organic lilies is not that really a complex effort, are you not thrilled to start on it? If you start now then you can later take pleasure seeing them blooming throughout the next summer. |
