Growing Organic Strawberries: It Requires Tender Loving Care
There are few really tasty commercial strawberries on the market. And the cost of this luscious fruit has been increasing throughout the years. You can grow organic strawberries right in your garden but it will need extra care and effort to have a good harvest. This plant is delicate and prone to disease and infestation so you better be careful when planting organic strawberries.
The main problem being faced by most strawberry growers is weed invasion. This could dry up the young plant because the weeds compete with strawberries for the soil nutrition. So before planting the plant, you must thoroughly treat the patch of land that you will allocate for strawberry plantation.
First, you need to plow the planned area. This will hopefully weed out the deeply embedded vegetations. You can also scorch the target plantation and allow the sun to destroy the remaining weeds. You must also create a plant buffer zone around the area.
After this procedure, you can again plow the treated land and cultivate it by incorporating rich organic fertilizers and compost. You must also irrigate the land to allow the nutrients to integrate with the soil.
You are now ready to plant the strawberry seeds. It is advisable to plant different varieties of strawberries. In this way, you can have a tear round harvest. Some varieties bear fruit faster than the others. So, you can harvest in mid-summer and you can also have strawberry fruits in late fall.
Give the plant enough spaces. Proper spacing is important to speed up growth, flowering and fruit bearing.
It is also important to provide wheat straw mulch on the base of each plant. Aside from the additional moisture retention capacity of mulch, it would keep the weeds away.
On the first sign of germination and sprouting, feed the plant with sufficient organic matter such as animal manure, rotten leaves and bark, compost, etc. It is also important to regularly water the plant.
In all these steps, you must be always on guard against weed growth and pests. You should quickly pluck out early weed growth and painstakingly kill pests. You can use organic anti-pest spray to stop any infestation.
If you can overcome this stage, you are assured that you can have a decent organic strawberry harvest.
