Easy Steps in Growing Organic Tomatoes
Tomatoes need a sunny area to grow. They would grow sturdier and bear fruit if they have plenty of sunlight. You need to plan the lay-out of your garden first before deciding to plant tomatoes. Growing organic tomatoes therefore would be best in summer in order to fully utilize sunlight.
If you do not have a space in your garden you can plant tomatoes on a garbage drum so you can place the tomatoes where there is plenty of sunlight. Tomatoes have the uncanny ability to thrive in cans.
You can now go to your nearest local nursery or plant seeds store and inquire on the sturdiest varieties of tomatoes. Choose varieties that have shown high survivability against common plant diseases.
After securing your seeds, you can now start by conditioning the soil. Mix your garden soil with compost fertilizer and other organic fertilizers. You can make your own fertilizer but there are lots of good organic fertilizers available in nurseries. Make sure that the garden soil and fertilizers have been incorporated thoroughly. Ensure enough moisture but remember that tomatoes do not like water-logged soil. You can add mulch on your garden soil to keep enough soil moisture.
You can plant the seeds of tomatoes. Ensure that there are enough spaces between the seeds and put stakes beside the planted seeds. These stakes will help tomatoes grow vertically and will keep them away from the soil. Tomatoes that hug the soil are at risk of getting diseases. It would be better to keep them upright and away from the ground.
Applying fertilizers should start right after the first sprouts have sprung up. Apply just the right amount on each mound or plot. Fertilizers should be applied just around the sprouts.
Make sure that the soil is always moist. Water the plant regularly and don’t allow them to wilt before irrigation. Wilting is a sign that the plant lacks the needed water content. It could be dangerous to the health of your garden tomatoes.
Finally, prevent pest from taking hold of your tomatoes. If you see signs of infestation, you can manually and painstakingly pick up the pesky bugs that could destroy the tomatoes. For worse pest attacks, you can purchase an organic pest spray which is available in most nurseries. |
