Growing Grass in Shady Areas Needs Special Attention
Many people like to have lawns and lawns need grass in it. If you want your lawn to be beautiful, you need to have nice looking grass on it too. Growing grass is a bit of work. Each type of grass needs different kind and different amount of attention. But one of the most difficult to do is growing grass in shady areas. That is why it gets tricky when the area you are going to plant grass in has big trees that provide large shady areas.
The first thing you should think through is choosing the right specie of grass to grow. It is advisable to grow a mix of grass composed mainly of fine leaf fescues since they are the ones that are most tolerant to shades and less sun. Included in this species are the creeping red fescues, hard fescues and the chewing fescues. The best time to start growing these grasses is around mid-August to September and around April.
Because the conditions these grasses will be under are quite difficult you would have to do the best to assist their growth and propagation. They would require more maintenance and taking care of to survive and to thrive. These grasses can tolerate dry seasons so limited watering is required. About an inch of water per week would be enough. But the best time to do this is during early mornings instead of afternoons and evenings when they are more bound to get more diseases.
Bear in mind that because these grasses are in shady areas there is a less photosynthesis going on. You would need larger leaf areas to do the work and produce more food for the grasses. So you should not mow the grasses very low. You should at least maintain three inches height all the time. You should also reduce the damage mowers could produce by mowing in different directions every time.
Some grass areas become thin from time to time. You would have to plant more grass on those areas when this happens. To do this simply rake the area, then sow some grass seeds on them. After that you would have to rake the area one more time and then maintain light moisture.
Again, maintenance is imperative when growing grass in shady areas. You cannot just leave it on its own if you want the grasses to grow and maintain its beauty.
