How To Plant And Care For Bulbs In Your Lawn
Planting bulbs in your lawn and making it look like it sprung up there naturally on it's own is an easy and straightforward way of making your lawn look colorful and spring-like. But while planting these bulbs are easy, there are a few factors and considerations to think of before going ahead and planting them.
Which bulbs thrive and do well planted in lawns:
- Crocus
- Iris reticulata
- Iris danfordiae
- Muscari
- Small daffodils
- Scilla
- Wood anemone
- Snowdrops
Choosing a location for your bulbs:
Bulbs do well in lawns that can provide the following conditions:
- Good drainage
- Fertile soil with organic matter
- Limited compaction
- Plenty of hours under the sun
- Scarce foot traffic
- 1 inch of water every week
How to plant bulbs:
Bulbs can be planted closer to each other than you would normally in a garden, but they should be placed deep into the soil. Apply bulb fertilizer following package instructions. To make your bulbs look natural, grab handfuls and drop them from the area of your chest then plant them where they land. They would look natural when growing and not like they were designed to be put there.
Caring for your bulbs:
Water your plants regularly after being planted. A good amount of 1 inch of water a week will do the trick. Putting a turf and bulb fertilizer is ideal to keep those bulbs blooming come show time.
Mowing your lawn:
A problem most people encounter when planting bulbs in their lawn is the question of when and how to mow the lawn with bulbs growing. The foliage that comes with the flowers will shoot up several inches after flowering that they sometimes cover the flowers. But to keep your bulbs healthy and thriving, you need to let the foliage die before you can mow the lawn. Wait for the foliage to turn yellow and begin to die.
