Growing Herbs
A great way to try out your green thumb is to grow an herb garden. These are easy to care, simple plants that doesn’t need the attention required than if you're growing a flower garden.
There are lots of reasons to have a herb garden. These reasons could be for medicinal purposes, culinary, or even just for decorating purposes. Another thing is, growing herbs are much more cheaper than buying them from your local supermarkets and garden stores.
Medicinal purposes:
For a long time now, herbs have been used to heal various light afflictions and to improve health conditions. Some also have been used to improve the health of the mind.
Culinary purposes:
Herbs have been known to be used by culinary experts for improving and enhancing the taste of foods. Herbs like thyme, tarragon, basil and such others are added and mixed to different kinds of foods to enhance their outcome.
Decorative purposes:
Herbs are also known to be used for decoration. Used in food presentation, or even as a house decoration, to improve the surroundings.
Where to plant your herb garden:
If you plan to start your herb garden, and are thinking of where to plant them, a space in your garden or even just a planter is ideal. If you have limited space in your yard or garden, then a pot or planter will do.
Here are a few things to remember when planting your herbs:
1. Make sure that the location of your herbs gets plenty of sunlight each and every day, for at least six to seven hours. If you plan to keep your planter of herbs inside, place them near a window that gets enough sunlight.
2. Make sure that the soil you plant them in is of good quality. If not, you can add organic mixtures and materials to make the soil more productive and enhance the growth of your herbs.
3. Make sure your herb garden gets watered.
Choosing which herbs to grow:
Planning and choosing which herbs you would want to grow depends on your purpose for growing an herb garden.
If you are growing an herb garden for medicinal purposes and natural remedies, ideal herbs to plant will be: ginger, aloe vera, chamomile, thyme and calendula.
Ideal herbs for culinary purposes are: basil, oregano, sage, bay leaves, marjoram, dill, mint, parsley and chives.
Herbs for decorative purposes can include: lavender, sage, rosemary, chamomile, lemon balm, hollyhock and evening primrose. |
