Vegetables For Your Garden
Here are some vegetables for your garden that are easy to plant, grow, and care for.
Potatoes
Homegrown potatoes are a must if you are picky about their taste. Why? Because homegrown and organically grown potatoes have better texture and flavor that those that are commercially produced. Start off with planting whole potatoes, as these are disease-free certified seeds. Cut these into pieces so that each section has two to three buds. Let them sit out overnight to cure. Meanwhile, in the garden, dig a trench about six to eight inches deep. Plant each cut piece of potato about a foot apart and cover with several inches of soil. As the plants grow, mound the soil up and around the stems. Do this until plants are about 18 inches tall. Once the plant produces flowers, baby potatoes can be dug; however, higher yields are achieved after the vine dies back.
Lettuce
Lettuce and other leafy greens are ideal vegetables to plant, especially if you're a salad type of person. To plant lettuce, scatter the seeds on the topsoil and keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Once the lettuce is a good three to four inches tall, cut the leaves, leaving an inch from the surface. This will bring about production of another set of leaves or harvest.
Beans
Beans are one of the easiest vegetables to grow. The ideal time to plant them would be after frost as they are a warm-season crop and only thrives during these warm months. Plant the seeds one inch deep within the soil and space them apart with the range of three to ten inches apart, depending on the type of beans you will be planting.
Herbs
Planting and producing fresh herbs are ideal for those culinary enthusiasts. These herbs, once they started growing, can be harvested anytime and does not depend on the season. They can be planted anywhere, from pots and containers, to your garden. Ideal herbs to plant are: thyme, rosemary, lavender, parsley and basil.
Tomatoes
Homegrown tomatoes are the best kind there is to eat. They are sweet, juicy, and more flavorful than those bought in the supermarket. It is ideal to plant tomatoes after frost when the warm season begins. Plant deeply within the soil, with the leaves protruding on the surface.
All of these vegetables need the usual care and attention that you're other plants require. Constant care, watering, feeding, and even pruning and staking for some, should guarantee you success as a vegetable gardener.
