Growing Organic Aubergine: Ensuring a Steady Supply of Eggplant for Your Family

Aubergine is your good old common eggplant.  Growing organic aubergine will provide your kitchen with a very versatile vegetable that can be cooked in different ways.  It could also serve as an extender to pork, liver, and meat dishes.  Aubergine is a French term but the plant originally came from Central Asia and India.  The English named it eggplant because the first aubergine that reached their land was the short egg-shaped variant.

As a tropical plant, aubergine needs lots of sunlight, warm climate, and relatively dry soil.  But this does not mean that aubergines cannot be successfully cultivated and grown in colder climates.  In fact, aubergine production in temperate regions became so popular that almost every home garden has a variety of the plant.  You just need proper soil, moisture, and climate management and balance.

Aubergines can thrive on soils consisting of sandy loams.  This soil material is ideal for draining water which aubergines want.  Alluvial sandy loams also retain heat which is essential for the growth of aubergines.

It is best to plant aubergines in mid-spring and throughout the duration of summer.  When the weather condition is not favorable you can easily postpone outdoor planting and allow the plant to grow on pots in greenhouses or in the garage. 

Aubergine is a slow bloomer. Flowering and fruit bearing could take most of the summer season.  But once it bears fruit you can be assured of a steady supply of aubergine that will last until the next season.

Growing organic aubergine could be painfully difficult because of scarcity of seeds.  Some aubergine plant has no seeds at all.  There is a good chance however that nurseries and botanical shops have aubergine seeds supply.

Although aubergine can survive in pots and plastic containers, you cannot maximize its fruit bearing abilities if it would stay indoors.  Aubergine roots embed deeply in the ground and this could be hampered if the plant stays on pots and containers.  You can replant it on your garden plot but make sure that you place it on a sunny spot.  Outdoors, the aubergine plant can speed up its growth and double its fruit yield.
