The Intricacies of Growing Organic Blueberries

Growing organic Blueberries in your own garden will certainly involve considerable investments in time, money and effort.  Blueberries are commercially produced by large plantations and agricultural industries.  It is a very lucrative fruit and commands a high market value.  There are attempts however in cultivating Blueberries in the backyard but it bore no significant results.

The reason behind the difficulty in producing Blueberries is the plant’s delicate requirements.  Blueberries are very climate specific and also very soil specific.  A change in weather conditions could affect the growth and production of Blueberry plant.

Blueberries need a balanced weather condition.  Frost in early spring can kill the plant as well as low temperature winds.  The plant is ideally grown in mid-spring so that when summer comes the fruit would be ripe for harvesting.  Any miscalculation or weather aberration such as late frost in spring or early onset of summer or winter can adversely affect the growth of the plant.

Blueberries are also very soil specific.  It needs a well-drained sandy soil that should be a little acidic.  This would allow enough moisture to be retained from the soil.  But the sandy soil will also prevent water logging which could be very detrimental for the plant.

Soil should be rich with organic matter and minerals.  Animal manures and rich composting materials are ideal components. It should be incorporated in the soil by thorough cultivation. 

Straw mulching is also important especially for young Blueberry plant.  This will protect the plant from frost and will also absorb enough moisture for the plant’s needs.

Flowering will start after several years of cultivation and care.  Blueberries will start to bear fruit during the mild weather conditions in mid spring and early summer.  When your Blueberry has survived its first two years, you can be assured that it will grow to full blossom as long as favorable weather condition cooperates.

Organic Blueberries cultivation and production can be very profitable even if you have only a few trees.  You can also enjoy its very delicious fruit.  Planting Blueberries could be difficult but it can promise a huge reward when it bears fruit.
