Growing Organic Cherries: Long Term Investment, Rewarding Fruits

Growing organic cherries is a long term investment.  This particular tree can take two to three years before it bears fruit.  So you will spend a lot of time caring for the young plant before you can taste its fruits.  The normal life span of Cherries however can last up to 35 years or more.  And once it bears fruit, you can benefit from its annual production of delicious fruit ideal for dessert, pies, candies, and other sweet goodies.

Cherries need a lot of sunlight to maintain a healthy growth.  It also thrives in sandy and lighter soil which should be well-drained.  These conditions can ensure high survival rates of young cherry plant. 

Although cherries need a well-drained soil, it also needs heavy infusion of water to sustain its needs especially to plants that are relatively mature.  You need to be careful however because it can also be stressed by water logging and its roots could rot if it constantly adhere to water.  That is why there is a need to balance drainage and watering especially for very young cherry plants.

Cherries also need heavy supply of fertilizers and organic materials.  Heavy fertilizer feeding is a specific characteristic of cherries.  So you better have ample supply of organic materials and organic fertilizers to sustain the needs of cherries.

Young Cherry plant should also be supported by artificial frames and sturdy stakes.  This is important to promote upright growth of mature Cherry trees.  A strong wooden stake would be enough for the first several months of growth, after this stage it would be able to support itself and maintain an upright growth.

It is important also to understand proper pruning for Cherries.  The young tree should be pruned to promote further growth.  Mature trees are also pruned so that new growth can be induced.  If you plant to cultivate Cherries, it would be necessary to study different pruning and cutting techniques.

Investing in Cherry plantation and production is a good venture.  This is a long term investment and you will have to spend many years before you can taste the fruits of your labor.  But once Cherries blossom, it would be worth all the troubles you spent.
